Twenty minutes by car, in the postcard village of Tällberg. Traditional Swedish dishes done properly, and the terrace looks straight across Lake Siljan. Our pick for a slow evening out — book ahead in July.

Afterwards, walk five minutes down through the village for the classic Tällberg view over the lake. The courtyard bakery sells cinnamon and cardamom buns to take home — they freeze well, not that ours ever last that long.
